Wireless Interactive Terrestrial Network Systems and Services

Ziel

WITNESS aims to upgrade existing prototype set top box units (from the iTTi project) for use with network interactive broadcast equipment to perform field trials of terrestrial interactivity. This work will lead to the deployment of improved and industrialised units for trials in real transmission networks. The performance of the complete system will then be extensively tested via technical field trials at two independents sites. WITNESS will examine EMC issues for the usage of the return channel and will improve the existing unit's diplexor architecture.

Frequency planning and spectrum usage recommendations will be derived from planning tools for the deployment of in band UHF interactive terrestrial services.

The emerging DVB-TRC standard will be evaluated and results of the WITNESS field trials and planning recommendations will be made available to the DVB projects.

WITNESS will establish a users group drawn up from a wide variety of broadcasters and equipment manufacturers to help define and develop a consensus on interactive terrestrial technologies. WITNESS will participate in IST based summits and conferences and will produce papers to highlight and promote the technology.

Objectives:
The WITNESS Project Objectives may be summarised as:
1. To develop, test, and validate the operation of a DTT Return Channel by deploying up-graded interactive wireless terminals in homes, and implementing challenging applications.
2. To investigate the inter-working of 3rd generation mobile telephony and interactive terrestrial broadcasting networks.
3. To develop spectrum planning tools, and frequency recommendations for complimentary DVB-UMTS services.
4. To develop resource management techniques for DVB wireless interactive services.
5. To drive standardisation in DVB and ETSI for a DTT in-band Return Channel (DVB- RCT).
6. To add seamless interaction capabilities to DTT, provide

Work description:
Work within the WITNESS trials will focus on FIVE main areas: Project management and results dissemination, User terminal upgrade, Network Equipment and spectrum planning, System integration and trials, and Service and application development. The objectives for each area are summarised below.

Project management and results dissemination:
Participate within all the relevant DVB subgroups working on interactive terrestrial networks and advanced telecommunication systems, including the DVB- UMTS group.
Cluster with the related IST projects DRIVE, MCP, and ADAMAS.
Promote ETSI ratification of the standard for the UHF wireless Terrestrial Return Channel before end-2001.

User terminal upgrade:
To upgrade the user terminal equipment developed within the iTTi project for trials, and to customise software and middleware to allow the user services be demonstrated.
To develop hardware for a simple antenna realisation on a set top box, permitting interactive connectivity.

System integration and trials:
Deploy field trials, in particular investigating electromagnetic compatibility issues with existing equipment and services.
Establish the system architecture.
Establish the preferred Polarisation (vertical, horizontal or mixed) for Set Top Transmission of the Wireless Return Channel.
Specify the Medium Access Controller and WAP protocols to ensure optimum efficiency of use of the allocated spectrum.

Equipment and spectrum planning:
Prepare for the industrialisation of the technology for incorporation into Set Top Boxes (STBs) and DVB Multimedia Home Platforms (MHPs).
Establish principles for sharing spectrum in Bands III, IV, or V for the Return Channel with existing or other planned services in these bands (UMTS).

Milestones:
Milestones of this take up action include:
- A DVB standard for interactive terrestrial networks, known as DVB-RCT
- Upgraded and working interactive terrestrial set top boxes
- Network infrastructures to support terrestrial interactivity
- Network management techniques for mass personal connectivity
- Spectrum planning and resource sharing tools for terrestrial networks
- Telecommunications and broadcasting convergence guidelines.ses and customisation, implementation and trai
