Multi-Element Transmit and Receive Antennas

Obiettivo

This project will analyse the feasibility and evaluate the performance of introducing multi-element adaptive antennas into mobile terminals in a combination with adaptive base station antenna arrays (including transmit diversity) for 3rd generation mobile communication systems with emphasis on UMTS, DS-WCDMA.

Objectives:
The main objective of the METRA project is to analyse the feasibility and evaluate the performance of introducing multi-element adaptive antennas into mobile terminals in combination with adaptive base station antenna arrays, including transmit diversity, for 3rd generation mobile communication systems with emphasis on UMTS. The performance analysis will be evaluated in terms of increased data rates, increased spectrum efficiency and increased coverage range whereas the feasibility will be analysed in terms of technical complexity of mobile and base station hardware, cost benefit analysis, impact on standardisation of future phases of EDGE/UMTS and pseudo-real time demonstration

Work description:
The METRA project will perform multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) matrix radio channel measurement to clarify the characteristics of the MIMO channel matrix in various mobile communication scenarios.
The project will thoroughly investigate state-of-the-art research in antenna array processing technology. The performance of various transmit and receive options will be analysed under realistic conditions, i.e. propagation, MAI, and other UMTS system aspects.
The project will also aim at developing novel hybrid solutions that can be implemented in future phases of UMTS looking into technological implementation aspects.
The METRA project will perform pseudo real-time demonstration of transmit and receive diversity concepts for UMTS. The outcome of the METRA project will impact the continuous standardisation process of UMTS.

Milestones:
Advancement on the suitable architectures or space-time processing equipment manufacture (both base and mobile stations)
Development of the space-time coding and decoding software running on real time. Such a real-time implementation of both multiple transmit and multiple receive antennas will be a unique feature of this project.
Impact on standardisation of UMTS allowing effective space-time processing.
