Objective The ATLANTIC project has three parts:(1) Operation of an ITS Forum based on e-mail groups, involving key individuals involved in Transport Telematics and Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). The Forum sub-groups will be benchmarking the coverage, content and results from the European ITS programmes against similar activities in the USA and Canada.(2) International meetings with American and Canadian partners in the project, who are self-funded. There will be round table discussion of the results of ITS benchmarking at the Transportation Research Board meeting in January 2002. ATLANTIC will also provide the secretariat for two International Workshops on ITS Cost-Benefit, held at the ITS World Congress in 2001 and 2002.(3) Development of good practice and policy on telematics based travel information services for cities and regions. ATLANTIC will work with key stakeholders and the POLIS network of European Cities and Regions as part of the e-Europe Transport initiative.Objectives:Objectives of the ATLANTIC Thematic Network are to:Stimulate an active debate amongst a key group of experts on the research taking place on Transport Telematics and ITS for surface transport;distil the lessons of experience of ITS research to inform decision-making among policy-makers, practitioners and other stakeholders concerned;identify barriers to progress with ITS research and make recommendations on the level at which it is most appropriate to address them;identify subjects where trans-Atlantic co-operation on ITS research would bring added value;for Telematics-based Travel Information (TTI) services, carry out case studies and formulate recommendations on suitable business models and good practice;facilitate discussion and analysis of issues emerging from the TTI through focus groups of key stakeholders;make available to principal actors and stakeholders the results of these discussions.Work description:The ATLANTIC Thematic network will operate as an Electronic Forum organised and co-ordinated through three geographically based network co-ordinators, one for each of Europe, Canada and USA.Forum Working Groups will cluster around three main themes and organised into sub-groups:Integrated Transport including TTI;Technologies and Services;Assessment and Evaluation of ITS. Each sub-group will address a programme of topics in their field.The project will make extensive use of the Internet in order to overcome geographical separation and involve widely dispersed teams. Through the use of established electronic forum methods, the ATLANTIC will operate as a series of virtual meetings, running to a fixed agenda. Each sub-Group will have as chair or Convenor an established expert in the field, drawn from across Europe. There will be similar nominations for USA and Canada. For the European component, the project will create a reference panel of experts to review output from the Working Groups and help provide strategic direction.On the subject of TTI journey planning and multi-modal travel information services the project will undertake the following activities:A review of the state of the art and good practice;identification of barriers and obstacles to service introduction across Europe through semi-structured interviews with key actors in the TTI sector;development of guidelines and draft recommendations on how to take-up good practices;expert input on these issues through the electronic forum and as part the POLIS annual conferences.An Internet site providing a single point of contact onto the current activities in Europe, including posted electronic information;Milestones:A trans-Atlantic meeting of the project partners will be held in January 2002. A Discussion Paper on the results of the Electronic Forum debates will be produced comparing the EU, USA and Canadian ITS research. Two International Workshops on ITS benefits will be arranged. A Forum event on the development of TTI services will be held. Internet and hard copy publications will be produced to disseminate good practice on ITS-based travel and traffic information.
