Construction and testing of a bayonet tube high temperature heat exchanger for advanced power generation cycles

Objective

The objective of the project is the testing of the High Temperature Heat Exchanger (HTHE) in a real aggressive hot gas environment produced by a 5MW multi-fuel boiler simulator with temperatures up to 1450 C. It will be divided into a ceramic part with advanced monolythic materials and a metallic one with oxide dispersion alloys. The HTHE consists of four modules equipped by 164 bayonet tubes with outer closed tubes (75 mm O.D.x1650 mm) and inner open tubes (50 mm O.D x 2150 mm). The HTHE is key component of the Externally Fired Combined Cycle (EFCC), technology based on the indirect fired gas turbine concept. The EFCC cycle is a cost effective and environmentally sound option for supplying future power generation and cogeneration needs; making use of coal and non standard fuels such as biomasses and wastes, it ensures substacial energy savings and reductions of greenhouse gases emission.
