Optimised Biogas Production and Resource Recovery through Bio-Augmentation in a Joint Plant Treating Poultry and Pig Wa

Objectif

In the region of Landal (Municipality of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal) there are 23 poultry farms with nearly 360.000 broilers and 600.000 quails and 38 pig farms with 12.000 pigs. The project aims to demonstrate the use of bio-augmentation to improve energy and resource recovery in a joint biogas plant for co-digestion of the 8.000 tonnes of poultry litter and 44.000 tonnes of pig slurry generated annually in those farms. The programmed addition of bioenineered cultures and separate anaerobic composting of the solid fraction will allow to overcome problems like the slow biodegradability of the poultry litter (bird excreta plus sawdust and wood shavings), the high level of solids predicted for the mixture (about 15% dry matter) and the excess nutrient load (N, P, K). Practical objectives are increase of biogas production and quality (more than 70% potential energy) and production of a pathogen free high quality compost.
