PROBALISTIC REASONING ON GRAPHICAL STRUCTURES WITH APPLICATIONS TO EXPERT SYSTEMS

Objetivo

The aim of the proposed collaboration is to develop both the theory and applications of probabilistic reasoning in graphical stuctures usually associated with 'expert systems.' In particular, we are concerned with fast algorithms for propagating evidence through variables whose conditional dependencies may be structured as a directed graph, updating the associated conditional probabilities in the light of accumulating data on many cases, and monitoring, criticising and adapting the qualitative structure. Rigorous methods for carrying out these tasks have a wide range of applications in areas where substantial qualitative knowledge exists in parallel with data bases, and form a bridge between statistical and knowledge-base approaches to decision-support systems.
