Networked @ appliances and services for the HOMe environment

Objective

The project is dedicated to the promotion of broadband home network and to the proof of concept of an open, end-to-end and seamless network architecture, with the objectives to provide citizens with new emerging IP-based broadband services. The overall network architecture is based on an open service platform, which allow technical management of the residential gateway clusters, billing, remote access to home portal and services delivery. The project involves development of the open service platform and its implementation in the define network architecture.
It involves also the integration of a broadband home network. The project is organised in 2 phases with demonstrations over PSTN and ADSL (phase 1) and over Ethernet and VDSL access network (phase 2).

Objectives:
The project is dedicated to the promotion of the Home Network and broadband value added services for the citizen. The approach is based on seamless, end-to-end and open network architecture.

The objectives of @HOM are:
1) To promote and demonstrate a seamless network access architecture that facilitate the delivery of emerging IP-based broadband applications and services;
2)To implement an open network architecture, allowing integration of new services easily and independently of hardware specifications, facilitating interoperability, and creating new business opportunities for operators, services providers, and content providers;
3)To allow connection to the home and to associated services from anywhere/any time;
4) To promote broadband technologies for the home network;
5) To contribute to standardization bodies, in time to impact decisions, in such a way that European networks specificities, and cultural differences are well taken into account.

Work description:
@HOM adopts a top down approach derived from a service scenario.

Identified requirements are the following:
1) remote access to the home from everywhere, at anytime;
2) internet access, internet sharing and home networking;
3) broadband home network to allow delivery of A/V services, gaming.

A generic end-to-end seamless network architecture will be defined.
It will be based on an open service platform including a web manager, a remote portal located in the access network and a service gateway located in the house. The overall service platform will be OSGI compliant. The building blocks of the defined architecture will be developed within the project. A broadband home network will be implemented, it includes a residential gateway based on existing platform and updated with adaptation software, broadband network interfaces such as Hiperlan 2 and IEEE 1394.
All developments undertaken in the project will be made from existing hardware, @HOM mostly concentrates on services layers, software and interfaces development. The project is organised in two phases. The first step is a demonstration across public network with PSTN and ADSL access network, a proof of concept of the open service platform and of the defined overall network architecture.
The second project phase is focused on broadband services; it concentrates on upgrading the open service layer and on implementing a broadband home network with service gateway and hipelan2 over 1394 interface, integration of HAVI stacks and development of illustrative broadband services. This second phase will be concluded by a demonstration over public network with VDSL access network and Ethernet.
Impact of new technologies such as UPnP and IPv6 will be investigated. Contribution to standardization will be made.

Milestones:

V1.0 of the service manager associated with the service gateway will be developed.
A first phase demonstration will be undertaken across public network between three partners sites, and validate the service layer concept.
The second phase over Ethernet and VSDL will demonstrate broadband evolution;

V2.0 of the home network, with integration of broadband services and broadband residential gateway, wireless over IEEE1394 interface.
Strong standardisation impact is expected.
