CISMUNDUS project builds on current European strengths in mobile and fixed communications, digital broadcasting, and rich content and network infrastructures and in consumer electronics and general electronic appliances by developing an innovative service concept of delivering content simultaneously by DVB-T and UMTS/GPRS networks. This combination of delivery systems will ensure the widest possible access to essential services to underpin the next generations of applications, as well as on contributing to issues of convergence, interoperability and interworking of these networks and the joint content delivered by them. The project will thus create a new communications environment that combines multiple delivery tools for people on the move.
The purpose of the CISMUNDUS project is to help create a new communications environment which combines multiple delivery tools for people on the move: Individuals as well as groups of people. The group of people may exist by accident (e.g in a train) or may be a common interest group that know each other. If the network is aware that there is a multicast need then the server or the network may choose to supply this information via DVB-T or UMTS/GPRS. This combines service targets not only at pedestrians in closed and populated areas such as stations, airports or sports stadiums but also at people in cars, trains, buses, metros and alike (e.g commuters and travelers). In order to achieve this, the project will specify a system-architecture for supporting convergence of DVB-T and UMTS/GPRS and specify the gateway functionality and the terminal API.This system will show how broadband service will be delivered to people on the move.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
WP 1: Project Management & External Relations This WP is to provide overview activities for the project.
WP 2: Identification of Converging Service Scenarios & System Specification. The WP is to identify and specify the key concepts of the project.
WP 3: Proof of Concept Applications, Content Servers and Terminals. This WP is to develop the applications to prove the CISMUNDUS concept, together with the terminal and the content server for the local gateway.
WP 4: Networks and Network Entities. This WP will identify and implement the modifications (expected limited) required mainly on existing experimental DVB-T network (and possibly experimental UMTS network) to support the services and applications.
WP 5: Integration and Demonstrations.This WP will demonstrate and highlight the benefits of CISMUNDUS working in a real on-air environment.
