Objective The intensive use of (two-stroke engine) scooters constitutes at the same time an essential mode of transportation and a serious pollution problem in major European cities and urban area. Fuel cell powering would be an attractive solution, even more than in other transport applications, because of the relatively high per-kilometre emissions of scooters. However, weights and volumes of present fuel-cell systems in the low-power range are still in contrast with what could be accommodated in a small vehicle like a scooter. The specific challenge dealt with in the FRESCO proposal, is to make the clean fuel-cell alternative suitable for scooters, and to prove the viability of this route by integrating the complete new power train into a mass-production type scooter. To this end, a modern scooter will be developed, built and tested, that should meet professional standards, have a maximum speed > 75 km/hr and a range of at least 100 kill for urban mission profiles. The power train will consist of a hydrogen-fuelled, polymer-electrolyte fuel-cell stack, a super capacitor module as a peak -power device and dedicated electric motor / generator.
