Present and retrospective state of organic versus inorganic aerosol over europe : implication for climate

Objective

The project attempts to quantify the radiative impact of organic/inorganic aerosol in Europe since ~ AD 1850. Present-day aerosol composition is investigated at remote sites on a west-east transect including precipitation samples. Apart from inorganic species, specific analyses comprise elemental, particulate and secondary carbon fractions as well as organic tracers including 14C for fossil/biomass differentiation. The change of organic/inorganic aerosol load over Europe since the pre-industrial era will there be reconstructed from available Alpine ice cores via experimental air/snow relationship at the glacier sites. Model simulations and observed organic aerosol distributions are iteratively used to estimate natural versus anthropogenic (primary/secondary) source contributions at present and past. From that, past trends in radiative aerosol forcing due to change in load and composition are quantified with regional model simulations.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/eu-vocabularies/euroscivoc.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
