Objective
The aim of the project is to develop a testing methodology for the on-line characterization of unfired ceramic tiles by non-contact and non-intrusive sensors. The most critical variable is density, which now is determined off-line by a mercury absorption method, that is slow and dangerous for the operator health. The new method will use air-coupled ultrasonic sensors to measure the propagation velocity and correlate it with the density. The signal can be used also to determine tile integrity and thickness. These data will allow to develop a control system for the press, and a data base for the real time optimization of the subsequent processes. The project will bring important benefits to the whole performances of the ceramic process, as enhancing the 1st quality percentage and optimizing the use of the resources, reducing fired and unfired scraps. It will also have social impacts by improving the working conditions and creating new and more qualified professional figures employed to manage quality control systems. Finally it will improve the measurement quality of important quantities for several other industrial fields.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
