Objective Begomovirus diseases transmitted by Bemisia tabaci are responsible for important economic losses in tomato crops in the Caribbean. Because of the limited resources of growers, the diversity of the agrosystems and the fragility of the ecosystems, the management strategies must be multi-component in nature and based on a thorough understanding of the pathosystems involved to ensure a sustainable development. BETOCARIB aims to study the pathosystems Bemisia-begomovirus-host plants and their epidemics to develop models in order to identify the key factors involved. Integrated pest management strategies able to reduce the impact of the diseases on tomato crops will be developed from these models and tested in the various islands. The most effective one will be transferred to all the islands to reach a sustainable management of begomovirus disease. This will be done through a scientific and technological co-operation between three European and four developing country research teams.
