Participation, leadership, and urban sustainability

Objective

Sustainable urban development is a key aim of policy makers at all levels of government. It is widely agreed that effective urban governance is of key importance in the achievement of sustainable city development. In order to realise effective urban governance it is crucial that city governments develop institutional forms and styles of leadership that promote decisiveness, facilitate the use of local knowledge and enhance public support. The objective of this proposal is to accumulate and disseminate practical knowledge about the complementarily of political leadership and citizen involvement in cities that are leaders in promoting sustainable development. By researching alternative approaches to urban leadership and community involvement in local decision-making in nine countries the project will identify aspects of good practice, and disseminate the research findings to cities, national governments, and the EU.
