Objective
With the emergence of broadband system, PC, interactive TV, and GSM become the platforms to access multimedia contents. PC, interactive TV, and GSM will need a powerful platform such as an Open 32 bits Full Speed multi-protocol Chip Card (OMPCC) to perform cryptographic tasks supporting Public Key Infrastructure, Conditional Access, or Data Right Management. High computing power, and high channel capacity are necessary. The 32-bit RISC platform will provide the power. The Universal Serial Bus will cohabit with the ISO, EMV, and Multi-Media Card protocols to serve the communication needs. USB will evolve to support "On the Go" initiative by the consumer appliance community.
Objectives:
The Full speed project aims at developing and delivering an innovative solution based on USB high-speed communication techniques, more powerful Central Processor Unit (CPU) and Java Operating System to support multimedia applications requiring high cryptographic calculation capacities. The OMPCC is compatible with ISO & EMV specifications.
Work description:
The project is organized in 2 major phases:
1) Advance on core technology blocks and prove the innovative technical concepts. A technology demonstrator will be provided at the end of this phase. It will run on a PC with driver and a PKI application.
This phase (Work package 3) will be divided into 5 different tasks:
- Core technology building blocks development;
- Development of innovative methods and associated tools;
- Card platform integration;
- Demonstration;
- Evaluation campaign to gain confidence in the resulting platform;
2) Integrate technology blocks and provide a first innovative DRM/CA solution. It will be a Pay TV application.
This phase (Work package 4) will be divided into 3 different tasks:
- Development of the additional Core technology building blocks;
- Integration and validation of the card platform as well as its host environment;
- Demonstration of an innovative solution for the interactive TV, Pay TV.
Under the Project management (Work package 1), these two main phases will be coordinated with a specification work (Work package 2), including architecture of the card platform and the DRM/CA solution, feasibility studies, and identification of requirements and functionality aspects.
Work package 5 will take care of the dissemination and exploitation of the project results.
Milestones:
The project ends with a demonstration of a new card, which allows the protection of digital broadcasted over a broadband system (Internet, TV).
For this demonstration a full decryption performed inside the card as a difference of the current situation where rights are decrypted in the card and in the terminal opening a door to potential hackers.
