Objective THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A NEW METHOD OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING BY X-RAY "VOLUDENSITOMETRY" FOR APPLICATION TO TECHNICAL CERAMICS AND OTHER ADVANCED MATERIALS.VOLUDENSITOMETRY CONSISTS OF THE RECONSTRUCTION OF AN IMAGE OF AN OBJECT'S DENSITY IN THREE DIMENSIONS FROM TRANSMISSION MEASUREMENTS ALONG A SERIES OF PROJECTION PLANES SURROUNDING THE OBJECT. THE CHOICE OF TECHNICAL CERAMICS AS THE FIRST FIELD APPLICATION OF VOLUDENSITOMETRY IS MOTIVATED BY THE PRESENT LACK OF METHODS FOR CHARACTERIZING THE DEFECTS IN CERAMICS OF COMPLEX SHAPE. EXAMINATION BY MICRORADIOGRAPHY IS CURRENTLY CONFINED TO TWO DIMENSIONS AND IS SUITABLE ONLY FOR CERAMICS WITH SIMPLE SHAPES. HOWEVER, ITS HIGH QUALITY GIVES A FIST INDICATION OF THE RESULTS WHICH COULD BE OBTAINED BY VOLUDENSITOMETRY. THE PROJECT WILL ALLOW BOTH CERAMIC'S MANUFACTURERS AND USERS TO DEFINE OR TO OPTIMIZE THEIR MANUFACTURING METHODS AS WELL AS TO STUDY THE SERIOUSNESS OF DEFECTS. THE METHOD CAN BE EASILY EXTENDED LATER TO OTHER MATERIALS, SUCH AS POLYMERS, COMPOSITES AND SEMICONDUCTORS.THE WORK INCLUDES THE DESIGN AND OPTIMIZATION OF AN EASY-TO-USE, COMPUTER-CONTROLLED ACQUISITION AND RECONSTRUCTION UNITS. ATTENTION WILL BE FOCUSED ON CHARACTERISTICS ALLOWING THE ACHIEVEMENT OF BOTH A CONVENIENT TOTAL TEST TIME FOR ROUTINE WORK AND THE BEST SPATIAL AND DENSITY RESOLUTION. INTERPRETATION OF RESULTS WILL BE FACILITATED BY A DEDICATED, FRIENDLY, MULTIFUNCTION DISPLAY SYSTEM ENABLE TO HANDLE THE LARGE QUANTITY OF PRODUCED DATA.A TESTING PROGRAMME WILL BE CONDUCTED BOTH ON REFERENCE CERAMIC PARTS WHERE CALIBRATED AND NATURAL DEFECTS WILL BE INDUCED, AS WELL AS SOME REAL MASS-PRODUCTION ITEMS. THIS FINAL PHASE IS TO CONFIRM THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SYSTEM AND EVALUATE THE SERIOUSNESS OF DEFECTS UNDER IN-SERVICE CONDITIONS.
