Fast ship applications for pod drives (FASTPOD)

Objective

Recent years have been witnessing a tremendous increase in the volume of large & fast sea transportation and electric driven azimuthing pod-propulsors with precise handling. While the "large & fast commercial ships" and "azimuthing pod drives" have been the most promising solitary EU grown technologies. There has been no attempt to combine these concepts to take further advantage of the prospect-combined technology. The main objective of FASTPOD project is to develop a new design technology to exploit the benefits that can be offered by electric padded drives on commercial large and fast ships in an efficient, safe and environmentally friendly manner. It is expected that the developed technology will provide basis to increase the competitiveness of the EU maritime industries further, as well as improving the efficiency and quality of marine transportation. The project objectives will be achieved in demonstrating the potential of the proposed technology through a number of design case studies for different ship types involving fast Ro-pax, containership and advanced high- speed craft, using numerical and experimental techniques. The main output of the project will be the critical assessment of this design technology and recommendations for its effective implementation

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
