Objective
Atmospheric particles and their individual chemical constituents (including PAH) have demonstrably significant social and economic impacts through adverse effects on human health and environmental quality. Effective control of these pollutants requires detailed knowledge of the relative contribution of their sources in order that action to reduce emissions can be most effectively targeted. Our overall objective is to develop and validate a readily transferable common methodological approach to source apportionment of atmospheric pollution that will be utilised by local city governments, thereby assisting in improving air quality in the cities of Europe. It will generate a technical report and accompanying user-friendly customised software package for data analysis that is designed to facilitate the widest possible use of the methodology across Europe by local authorities.
