Objective In the automotive industry, sensors are becoming an increasingly important field of technology. The rising need to reduce emissions, improve fuel economy and enhance safety has driven the market for automotive sensors in electronic systems. Drive-by-wire, electro-hydraulic brakes and high-pressure fuel injection systems and different kinds of airbags are features of automotive innovations from the last decade that are facilitated by sensors. For example, the new Citroën C5 has 54 sensors (including the driver). Overall objective of the proposed research project is to develop next generation (new and improved) automotive sensors for various applications, like the power train segment (sensors for intelligent pressure sensor for Euro IV-compliant common rail diesel injection systems), the safety segment (airbag control) and the climate control segment (next generation air-quality sensors). Texas Instruments (TI) is one of the leading companies in the world wide automotive pressure sensor market. TI has realised several innovations in this field, a.o. common rail pressure sensors for diesel engines based on so-called PSG and MSG technologies. Current market developments in the automotive industry demand for continuous efforts in research and development, to improve existing technologies and to develop new technological solutions. In its current pressure sensor product portfolio, TI is faced with several challenges.For example:the accuracy of the current pressure sensors needs to be improved;the measurement range needs to be extended to higher pressures and the production costs need to be reduced.In addition, this project is concerned with research on the detection of very low concentrations of toxic gases and gases which produce unpleasant odours for the development of an innovative air quality sensor.
