Modern separation science for analytical radiochemistry

The measurement of radionuclides in the environment is an essential requirement in the nuclear industry. It could be argued that the existing technology in radio-analytical chemistry has reached its practical limits and that a new approach is required to satisfy future requirements. The proposed research training area will enable two Research Fellows to join a team of scientists undertaking fundamental research in analytical chemistry. The specific project involves the introduction of modem separation science to classical radio-analytical chemistry. Within this area, two inter-connected tasks are proposed;
a). Supercritical fluid extraction for the isolation of radionuclides from bulk samples and,
b) the development of supported ligands technology and molecular/ionic imprinted polymers for specific chemical separation. A successful research program will have a dramatic affect on radio-analytical chemistry within BNFL and indeed worldwide. The program should be considered as a revolutionary rather than evolutionary process. Fellows will have access to state-of -the art laboratories and facilities for radio-analytical chemistry both within BNFL and at the BNFL Centre of Excellence in Radiochemistry at the University of Manchester. This broad academic base, supported by opportunities to undertake behavioral skills development, will provide an exceptional postdoctoral training regime.
