Fast beam storage and fragment imaging methods for uv and vuv photodissociation of molecular ions

Obiettivo

Detailed studies of photo dissociation give insight into the dynamics on excited state potential energy surfaces that are of fundamental importance for understanding reactions of molecular systems. Photo-dissociation processes also play a significant role in atmospherical and astrophysical models. It is proposed to build anew experimental system for studies of photo dissociation of small atmospherically and astrophysical relevant molecular ions. It will be used with pulsed UV lasers and also matches the requirements of a proposed experiment at the new TESLA Free Electron Laser facility.
Briefly, in the experiment small molecular ions are produced, stored in an electrostatic ion trap at energies of several kilo electron volts (keV), extracted, and brought to interaction with laser radiation. All fragments emerging from the ion-laser interactions are detected with two imaging detectors. Ion storage allows the initial state of the ions to be prepared prior to the interaction with the laser light, and high incident ion velocities allow efficient imaging of all fragments. The composition and internal excitation of the fragments can then be deduced from the reaction kinematics providing a detailed view of the photo fragmentation dynamics. Among the first systems to be studied is the photo fragmentation of chlorine oxide anion, which is relevant for the chemistry of the ionosphere, and the dissociation of small positive carbon hydrides of relevance for modelling of the interstellar space.
The applicant has already research experience with molecular physics using fast ion beams, ion trapping, and imaging detection in individual experiments. The possibility to combine this knowledge in a new experimental setup to study photo dissociation of atmospherically and astrophysical relevant molecular systems, with the prospect of also performing one of the first experiments at the new VUV Free Electron Laser facility, will be a challenge and an excellent training for the applicant. The applicant will also benefit from working in an international leading research institution, where interactions with distinguished scientists are possible. The applicant’s knowledge of electrostatic ion trapping, in particular the possibility to extract ions will be valuable for the project and the host institution.
