Objetivo The recent exponential development of new algorithms to perform molecular phylogeny is creating a gap between theoretical biologists and virologists interested in molecular epidemiology. The workshop is intended to fill this gap, by giving virologists a theoretical/practical background in the main bioinorganic tools used for phylogenetic analyses of viral sequences. The students will be trained on how to analyse real data sets drawn from the literature. In addition, we will stimulate the participants to discuss with the teachers the application of phylogenetic analysis to the specific epidemiological problems they encounter during their own research. We will introduce an integrated UNIX environment, developed during the last year by bioinformaticians, which provides a powerful user-friendly interface for scientists interested in virus molecular evolution.
