Agricultural Prelude in Russian Forest

Ziel

The project is aimed at investigating the emergence and early development of agriculture and stockbreeding in the boreal forests of North-Eastern Russia. This insufficiently studied process was of fundamental importance in the formation and interaction of the main ethnic groups in that area: the Slavs, Balts and the Finns. This problem is addressed by means of the multidisciplinary investigations of a group of Late Prehistoric lake settlements in the basins of the Western Dvina and Lovat Rivers, in the present-day districts of Pskov and Smolensk of the Russian Federation. These sites, which are being excavated by Russian archaeologists over the past 20 years, have produced a long sequence of settlements, stretching over 3000 years. The archaeological deposits at these sites were found predominantly in a wetland matrix; they have already yielded rich and diversified materials reflecting the gradual transition from foraging to farming type of subsistence in that area of East European forests. The present project envisages the use of a novel methodology by a balanced consortium of experts from INTAS countries and Russia.

The methods include the measurement of organic samples in two radiocarbon laboratories (Institute for History of Material Culture and St. Petersburg University) and the processing of obtained measurements with the use of statistical procedures recently developed at the University of Newcastle (UK). The stratigraphically controlled excavations of key sites and environmental data will be recorded and processed with the use of state-of-the-art GIS technology developed in the UK. The obtained archaeological and environmental evidence will be assessed and analysed in the wider context of Central and Western Europe. The final product will include a series of interactive GIS maps and texts, which eventually will be placed in the public domain as a WWW site.
