Objective
The aim of this project is to design new supramolecular homo- and heteropolymetallic systems with pre-established magnetic and optical properties, by using copper(II) complexes, [Cu(AA)(BB)]+, as assembling building-blocks.
The project involves two main directions:
1. To gain more insights into the magneto-structural correlations at the supramolecular level, with special emphasis to the stacking interactions. These interactions play a significant role in magnetism, providing an exchange pathway, and in crystal engineering, by a further increase in the dimensionality of the overall structure. Consequently, these interactions deserve to be deeply investigated. This part of the project will focus on the chemistry of copper(II), since the low spin of the metal ion eliminates the complications from features such as zero field splittings and resultant anisotropy;
2. To design new homo- and heteropolynuclear complexes with expected magnetic and optical properties, by using appropriate bridging ligands or by self-assembling anionic building-blocks, such as [M(CN)6]3- (M = Cr, Fe), [Cr(C2O4)3]3-, [Cr(AA)(C2O4)2]-, [Cr(NCS)6]3-, with the [Cu(AA)(BB)]+ assembling cations, (AA = bipy or phen, BB = chelating mononegative ligands) and/or with photoactive species, e. g. [Ru(bipy)3]2+,3+. A special emphasis will be given to the synthesis of new molecule-based magnets and of high spin molecules.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
