New Developments of Electron Beam Technique in CO2 containing Rarefied Flows

Obiettivo

The project proposes the development of electron-beam technique (EBT) for local non-disturbed measurements inside rarefied flows of gas mixtures containing CO2 in view of providing experimental data for the simulation of Spacecraft entry in the Martian Atmosphere. Evidently, experimental tests in wind tunnels appear as the last step of verification of designer's decisions and validation of physical models used in numerical simulations. That is why the development of modern techniques for non-intrusive measurements inside gas flows based on new scientific achievements is a problem of constant attention.

The main idea of this project is to develop the electron beam method for density measurements in rarefied gas mixtures and to extend it to conditions never mastered before:

more complex gas compositions CO2+ N2 mixture;
higher pressures (up to 600 Pa) and higher densities (up to 7 1016 cm-3),
ionized and dissociated components of CO2+ N2 mixtures;
presence of carbon particles and/or its vapor.

Moreover, these investigations will help calibrate CO2 flows of the VKI long shot gun tunnel. The results will also be important to help the use of this technique for diagnostics in the future hypersonic plasma wind-tunnel of the Laboratoire d'Aérothermique, planned to be operated with high temperature CO2-N2 mixture.

In the second part of the project the E-beam method will be applied to the ONERA-F4 high enthalpy wind tunnel operated in a CO2 + N2 mixture in the free stream and around a blunt body . It is anticipated that the project will contribute to a better understanding of the problems connected with entry in Martian atmosphere. In particular the computer codes especially developed for this will be tested and improved.

The teams involved in the project will co-operate closely through an active exchange of research results and personnel, joint publications and regular meetings. The research results obtained in the framework of the project will be presented in the form of scientific papers and detailed scientific reports.
