Synthesis, magneto-optical study, and theoretical analysis of d-f clusters with ferromagnetic properties

Ziel

The proposed project is concerned with the potential use of lanthanide ions in the design of novel molecular magnets. To this end an extensive research study will be undertaken of "mixed" inorganic compounds, containing both d and f elements. The study comprises three interconnected parts:

1. Synthesis
Several polydentate ligands, containing carboxylic and phenolic groups will be used to form mixed d - f polynuclear complexes. The nature and geometry of the ligand bridges will be changed in a systematic way to promote ferromagnetic interactions;

2. Physical chemical measurements
State of the art techniques is available to carry out detailed magnetic measurements on the newly prepared complexes. This will lead to adequate characterisation of the ground state magnetism and effects of the environment. In addition excited state properties, and possible magneto-optical effects will be studied in luminescence;

3. Theoretical models and calculations
In parallel to the experimental work, the project considers an important theoretical task, which should lead to the development of a microscopic theory of exchange interaction in "mixed" compounds, based on ab initio calculations and model approaches. This treatment will rationalise the results of the previous tasks, and in turn define novel target molecules for synthesis. Effective spin Hamiltonians, based on the theoretical results, will play an important role in the description of the magneto-optical measurements.

We expect the outcome of the project will be
1) a significant advance in the general understanding of magnetic interactions between transition-metal ions and lanthanides, and;
2) a detailed application of this understanding in the design of novel magnetic materials.
