Objective The main goal of the project is the design of novel homogeneous catalysts on the basis of tailor-made hybrid phosphine ligands. In the course of the project a number of functional hybrid phosphines will be obtained from a wide range of primary phosphines, based on the reactions of primary phosphines with functionalised halides or aldehydes in the presence of functionalised amines, especially amino acids. The two mutually connected aspects of functional hybrid phosphines, namely, water-solubility and binucleating ability towards hard and soft transition metals, due to the hydrophilic properties and reactivity of the functional groups, will be investigated, with the major goal of designing highly effective and stereoselective catalysts for mono- and biphasic reactions, such as olefin metathesis, polymerisation of e-caprolactone, ethylene carbonate, and glycolide; and co-polymerisation of e-caprolactone, ethylene carbonate, or olefins with carbon monoxide; and chiral polymerisation of L-(-)-lactide, leading towards biodegradable polymers. Therefore a sophisticated investigation of the properties of the desired novel phosphines is proposed, uniting the efforts of organoelement, organometallic, structural, and catalytic teams. This approach provides the possibility of solving a number of fundamental problems, such as reactivity of hybrid phosphines, structure and behaviour of their transition metal complexes in solution, mechanism and structure of intermediates of the catalytic processes, as well as a number of applied problems of precatalyst design, the most effective conditions for the catalytic reactions, as well as utilisation of the results in industry.
