Modelling Studies of Preferential Flow in Irrigated Soils

Cel

The project aims to investigate experimentally and theoretically by the means of numerical simulation the mechanisms of preferential water flow in soil with heterogeneous pore space structure. The experimental studies will be carry out on four type of irrigated soils: on chernozem in Ukraine near Kharkov, on sirtisoil in Russia near Saratov, on brunisoil in Russia near Rostov Don, in solontchak in Uzbekistan near Tashkent.

The modelling studies will focus on coupling water flow simulating and unsaturated soil hydraulic property estimating. The main specific objectives are:
- to carry out a complex of field and laboratory experiments enhancing the understanding of water flow in four types of soil with heterogeneous pore space structure;
- to develop and evaluate a set of comprehensive models simulating water flow in soil with heterogeneous pore space structure and estimating hydraulic properties of such soils;
- to assess a risk of impact to subsurface water from preferential water flow through soil with heterogeneous pore space structure.

The work programme consists of two major parts: an experimental part (T1) and a modelling part (T2 and T3)
Experimental part is consisting of field and laboratory experiments. Field experiments investigating the preferential flow process will be made in small-scale plot to provide datasets for the calibration of water flow models. These experiments will be carried out on a variety soils having a heterogeneous pore space structure and representing a challenge for preferential flow modelling.
Modelling part of the project is subdivided into two parts. First (T 2) is aimed to verify and evaluate for four soils both set of models simulating preferential flow using a datasets of small-scale field experiments and estimating unsaturated soil hydraulic properties using a datasets of laboratory analyses & experiments. Second (T 3) is aimed to validate the set of both models simulating preferential flow and estimating unsaturated soil hydraulic properties by computing experiments of sensitivity & uncertainty analyses and to assess the risk of impact to subsurface water in different circumstances.
The expected results will be important for understanding and parametrizing the preferential water flow process in soil with heterogeneous pore space structure. The expected outcomes of the validated models are numerous. In particular, the results can be used to assess the risk of impact to subsurface water, obtain the soil unsaturated hydraulic parameters by indirect method using soil physical properties. The results of field and laboratory experiments will give the unique information on the preferential water flow in four widely used in agriculture soils. The progress in understanding of both preferential water flow dynamics and their parameterisation will enable the development of more adequate models for their description. The indirect method of water flow parameterisation could be used for remote sensing investigations in the large-scale.
