Obiettivo This project deals with a systematic research of SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (SBN-x) crystals with different compositions (x varying from 0.61 to 0.75) and dopants (mostly lanthanide trivalent rare earth and transition metal ions). The choice of this kind of ferroelectric relaxor crystals is because of several advantages from both theoretical and experimental viewpoints: Low Curie temperatures and high sensitivity to composition (x) and dopants, strong photorefractive and optically frequency conversion efficiency and, very important, its cylindrically shaped random size ferroelectric domains. All these aspects provide a nice interplay between its ferroelectric and nonlinear properties, promising several ways of designing its nonlinear response for potential infrared to visible frequency conversion and holographic data storage applications. The project involves a full research of these crystals including:i) The growth of new SBN-x crystals doped with trivalent RE ( Ce, Nd, Tm and Yb) or transition metal (Cr and Co) ions in different concentrations by means of new growth methods devoted to improve the optical quality of these crystals;ii) A full characterisation of these crystals by investigating their optical, electro-optical, spectroscopic, ferroelectric and holographic properties;iii) Tests of these crystals as potential frequency converters, solid state lasers and storage holographic devices;iv) A set of theoretical studies to interpret the obtained experimental results and to recommend its behaviour as potential devices.A set of seven teams from Ukraine (2), Russia (2), Germany (2) and Spain (1) belonging to very prestigious research centres has been formed to fulfil the different objectives proposed in the project. The research programme organised in five tasks (with different subtasks) which are closely inter-related according to the facilities and experience of the involved research teams. These tasks will be covered in the proposed time (30 months) with a schedule that permits a full organisation of the different tasks that will be co-ordinated from Madrid (Spain) with assistance given from Osnabrück (Germany).
