Objectif The main goal of the project is to develop advanced methods for solving the direct and inverse problems of remote sensing of clouds by LIDARs. The objectives are as follows:- to develop an up-to-date optical model of cirrus clouds taking into account the ice-crystal-particle size and shape distributions and their preferred orientations;- to elaborate and to implement new effective methods for simulation of LIDAR returns in cloudy atmosphere taking into account:(a) light polarization;(b) Raman scattering;(c) stochastic spatial structure of clouds, and;(d) anisotropic optical properties of certain types of clouds (cirrus);- to elaborate new semi-analytical and numerical methods for retrieving geometrical, optical, and microphysical parameters of clouds from spaceborne LIDARs of new generation.This project is to work out by 5 teams: Co-ordinator - Professor Ariel Cohen, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, CR1- team leader Professor U. Sci., Novosibirsk.All the teams are actively collaborating within the framework of the annual International Workshop on Multiple Scattering in Lidar Experiments (MUSCLE) for more than 10 years.An up-to-date optical model of clouds is planned to elaborate on the basis of a numerical solution to the problem of light scattering by an oriented ice crystal particle of cirrus clouds, a stochastic spatial structure of clouds being modelled with new developed algorithms. All the teams have at their disposal their own Monte Carlo codes for calculations of multiple scattered lidar returns. These codes are planned to develop and to improve for solutions to a difficult ill-posed problem of retrieval of both optical and microphysical parameters of clouds from spaceborne and ground based LIDAR returns.
