Charge transport in metal-diboride thin films and heterostructures

Objective

The recent discovery of superconductivity in magnesium-diboride MgB2 has offered the possibility to utilize a new class of low-cost, high-performance superconducting materials for e.g. (quantum)-electronic applications and magnets. The relatively high critical temperature, approaching 40 K, places the compound intermediate between the families of low-Tc and copperoxide-based high-temperature superconductors. At the same time the central basic question whether the pairing state in the new superconductor resembles that in the cuprates or that for conventional metallic superconductor remains unsolved.

From an applications point of view, magnesium-diboride has exciting potential, but the processing of this new material needs to be enhanced. The network that unites four INTAS member state teams (The Netherlands; Israel; Italy, and Slovakia) and five NIS groups (Russia-Moscow; Russia-Chernogolovka; Ukraine-Donetsk; Ukraine-Kiev, and Tajikistan) will be focused on basic issues in the physics and material science of diboride-based superconducting hybrid structures and their applications as electronic devices. All INTAS member state teams and a part of the NIS teams have already started their activities in this field, and combining their activities is considered to present great added value.

The project duration is planned for 36 months. Joint activities of the network will be concentrated on;
(i) Measurement and theoretical analysis of charge-transport characteristics and superconducting properties of thin films and ceramics of MgB2, ZrB2 and other boride-based compounds. Central in these investigations are heterogeneous systems such as point contacts, break junctions, and thin-film tunnelling contacts of the metal-insulator-metal type;
(ii) experimental and theoretical studies of Josephson circuits, materials science topics, and device-related activities;
(iii) information exchange actions, including short research visits, an electronic information newsletter, annual workshops to be organised in NIS, and a network Web-site.

A further central aim of the network will be to involve young scientists from the participating groups into an international co-operation in one of the most actual, competitive and intriguing fields in modern solid-state physics.

Results of the collaboration efforts will be summarised in joint research publications and review articles. The most important stages of the work will be reviewed in extended versions of the newsletter. The abstracts presented at the workshops will appear on a Web site, as well as in a printed form. The proceedings of the workshops will possibly be published in special issues of a renowned journal. The results of the network activity including a list of relevant publications, copies of the newsletters and reports about annual workshops will be sent to INTAS each 12 months and at the end of the network-duration.
