Creation of Novel Sensors for Ecological Monitoring of Industrial Environment

Cel

The overall objectives of the project are
(1) development of a new generation of in situ sensor devices for environmental monitoring, which will have nano-scale sizes and unique parameters and;
(2) fundamental studies of advanced multi-component metal oxide and alloys matrix for gas sensor applications using ab initio and molecular dynamics approaches.

The multi-component SnO2(In2O3)-MexOy ((MexOy): Fe2O3, CuO, CoO) metal oxide matrix is chosen as a promising materials to improve the operating characteristics of SnO2-based GS. The ultra-thin palladium alloys films will be obtained and investigated on the molecular level for optimisation of their properties as catalytic active electrodes of the MIS sensors. Study of both structural and phase transformations in complex metal oxide films during their interaction with different reducing and oxidizing gases in air is planned by applying in-situ methods (Raman and FTIR spectroscopy), as well as physical-chemical characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, XPS).
The key innovative feature of the project is the withdrawal from the empirical approach during development of gas sensors. Quantum mechanical computer modelling of intermediates and transition groups at the reconstructed surfaces of metal oxide doped by Pd, Pt and other ligandes would allow to detect the chemical surface reactions paths between detected atoms/ molecules and local surface centres, create an atomistic picture of sensing mechanisms and methods for prognosis of gas response properties of the semiconducting materials. Design of innovating one-electrode sensor, based on spray pyrolysis combined with substrate microfabrication would allow substantial miniaturization, improving the operating characteristics of gas sensors and reducing their costs.
Participants of the Project plan to create sensor devices that will allow indicating simultaneously a wide spectrum of combustible gases with super-high degree of reliability. The sensor arrays that will be produced as a result of this project will allow detecting with high sensitivity and selectivity the typical air pollutants (CO, NOx, SO2, CH4, H2S and other). Realization of the Project will give a new tool for decision of ecological problems in European countries. With the help of novel sensor batteries it will be possible to detect the dangerous air pollutants at the early stages of extraordinary incidents in the industrial conditions and in the conditions of life.
