Physics of nanoscale quasi-one-dimensional conductors

Ziel

The main objective of the project is to study the physical properties of quasi-one dimensional conductors on a scale of nanometers. Modern technologies (e-beam lithography, focused-ion-beam milling, reactive ion etching) will be used for fabrication of nanometer sized samples, as well as new devices that utilize the specific properties of the charge-density waves (CDW) conductors. Two main research directions are proposed. The first one is the fabrication and study of whisker-based nanowires. Sample sizes of the order of the amplitude correlation lengths are expected to be reached. In such nanowires elecron-electron interactions play a dominant role. First interesting observations of Luttinger-Liquid like behaviour have already been made. The second direction involves the fabrication of nanometer-sized CDW devices. These samples will be used to map out CDW dynamics on a microscopic scale using a combination of scanning-tunnelling microscopy and electrical transport measurements. Measurements on such small devices are unprecedented. New phenomena are likely to be found.
