Objetivo Garnets compose an extensive family of ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic crystals with various properties, which can easily be changed by substitution of the ions in the crystal lattice. This is one of the reasons why crystals and films of garnets found a broad application in various devices. Photomagnetic phenomena were originally discovered in yttrium iron garnet. For a long time this crystal remained the only example in the garnet family with these effects. However, in the last year's metastable persistent photoexcited states were also discovered in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases of manganese germanium garnets and in paramagnetic terbium gallium garnet. These states arise because of the existence of photoexcited long-living centres and because of their light-induced redistribution as a result of optical charge transfer transitions. Hitherto the mechanisms responsible for the photoinduced effects in garnets are not sufficiently understood. Yet, there is reason to assume that metastable light-induced changes of the material properties should be common phenomena in garnets. This project wants to reveal the nature of the metastable photoinduced states in ferrimagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic garnets and to identify the responsible photosensitive centres. To accomplish this task leading research groups in this field from INTAS and NIS member states have decided to join their efforts and expertise. The search for new photosensitive garnets and the comparison of peculiarities and regularities of their metastable photoexcited states play a key role in this project. For promoting future applications with these materials one of the objectives of the project is to develop a phenomenological description and, later on, a microscopic model for the photoinduced effects. To that purpose the effect of polarized and unpolarised light on optical, magneto-optical, and magnetic properties, its kinetics and temperature dependences of different parameters will be investigated for rare earth and yttrium garnets, garnets with 3d-ions in the octahedral positions, rare earth paramagnetic gallates and aluminates. Another objective is the demonstration of recording of holographic gratings, in particular, of magnetic gratings. This opens new perspectives for the application of photosensitive garnets, namely long-term optical storage of high density, processing of information, and production of holographic elements for neutron optical applications.
