Architectural qualities of Ekaterinburg's public spaces

Objective

Public spaces in a city until now have been studied in the longer term by urban sociology; but it gives little information on their architectural forms and participation of the architecture in the behaviour of man. In architectural perspective, which our research fits into, we will study the introduction of the contents of urban life into the architecture of semantic forms. The research will try to capture public spaces of Ekaterinburg (Russia) and connect their architectural qualities with the behaviour of people in them. The basic goals of the study consist in defining interrelations between architectural qualities of public spaces in a modern city and the social behaviour of people, and developing methods, which would help improve social atmosphere in urban spaces and their image by architectural means. The research will be carried by four research groups led by A. Barabanov (Ekaterinburg, Russia), S. Postnikov (Ekaterinburg, Russia), S. Mityaguine (Saint Petersbourg, Russia), J.Muntañola Thornberg (Barcelona, Spain), A. Lagopoulos (Thessaloniki, Greece) P. Pellegrino (the co-ordinator, Geneve, Suisse).

The programme of the project consists of the following steps:

- Drawing up a database on public spaces in Ekaterinburg and selection of sites for the study,
- Morphological analysis of composite qualities of architectural spaces;
- Fixation of instances of urban life in spaces,
- Semiotic analysis of the instances of urban life and behaviours of people,
- Drawing up of an interim report
- Processing of coded information with the cross-referencing of the morphology of space and the semiotics of behaviour;
- Development of methods for harmonising social atmosphere by transforming the spatial qualities of the architecture of public spaces;
- Drawing up of the final report.

This project fits into in a new cycle of semiotic studies in architecture concerning city as a signifier, town-planning contents and its inclusion in the behaviour of individual actors or collectives. It is suggested that attention should be focused not on architectural form as a material subject but on town-planning structures of form, which organise a public space, and interrelations should be studied between their images and the behaviour of actors on an urban stage. Theoretical results of the research in the form of a picture of semiotic interactions between the material space of architecture and the virtual space of social communication, practical results in the form of a technique for improving architectural qualities of the environment of a modern post-industrial city.
