New time/frequency standards for precise measurements in physics

Obiettivo

The project deals with the realization of a new frequency standard in the optical region with the potential being three orders of magnitude more accurate than the existing Cs standard. The new standard is important for many applications in technology such as navigation and communication. Furthermore it can be used for fundamental physics since it will allow investigating basic phenomena more accurately than ever before. In the frame of the project the following tasks will be pursued.

Development of a new super-stable compact laser sources for In+-trap experiment.
Ultra high resolution spectroscopy of 1So-3Po In+ transition in single ion trap with accuracy < 10Hz (1-10Hz).
Creation of a new laser system for absolute frequency measurements in the UV-region using a femtosecond synthesizer (optical comb generator) and a new modified CH4-standard.
Absolute frequency measurements of 1So-3Po In+ transition with accuracy of 1-10Hz.
Active stabilization of the laser frequency using the 236 nm ultra-narrow In+-line. Investigation of external influences on the In+ clock transition - determination of the accuracy of this new optical clock.
