A new bathymetric computer map of Lake Baikal

Ziel

A good knowledge of the bathymetry of Lake Baikal is of great importance for everyone involved in scientific research on the lake, fisheries, and environmental protection, safety of navigation, tourism and education. The present bathymetric map, produced by the Ministry of Defence in 1992, has a number of important shortcomings. The aim of the project is therefore to produce - using only existing data - a new and more accurate, computer-generated bathymetry map of Lake Baikal and to prepare this map as a computer (CD-ROM) document for convenient use for all scientific and applied purposes.

This will be done by:
re-compiling and digitising the original bathymetric sounding data used for the 1992 map;
collecting and digitising any additional bathymetric data, acquired since then by other teams;
performing accurate measurements of temperature, salinity, depth and sound velocity in order to determine the corrections to be applied to acoustic soundings, and applying these corrections to all available data;
creating from this new, enlarged and corrected data set a new computer-generated bathymetric map of Lake Baikal, as well as a number of thematic maps and 3D representations
