Obiettivo The ATLAS experiment will attempt to fully exploit the physics potential of the next large accelerator to be operated in high-energy physics, the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Geneva. The Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) is a key component of the ATLAS Inner Detector and the participants of the proposed project are responsible for a major part of the design, construction and operation of the TRT.The proposed joint research project will provide a forum of institutions with advanced expertise in the field of radiation-hard gaseous detectors and front-end electronics. It intends to strengthen co-operation between the European scientific community and the Russian teams, and to solve the serious technical problems posed by the development and construction of radiation-resistant high-accuracy tracking gaseous detectors at the LHC.The deliverables of this project can be classified into three categories:tooling for straw and wheel assembly and for quality control, together with it's associated software. These will be documented mainly through CAD drawings, technical specifications, and descriptions of procedures, which will be accessible from the ATLAS Engineering Data Management System using the World Wide Web;assembled straws and end-cap wheels. These will be documented mainly through CAD drawings, technical specifications, descriptions of procedures, and quality control reports, which will be accessible from the ATLAS Engineering Data Management System using the World Wide Web;electronic components (fuses, printed circuit boards, integrated circuits, VME readout modules). These will be documented mainly through CAD drawings, technical specifications, and industrial contracts, which will be accessible from the ATLAS Engineering Data Management System using the World Wide Web;The overall production and assembly will be monitored centrally at CERN through the use of the production database presently under design and implementation. At the end of each task, a separate report shall also be submitted, if deemed useful for the project participants and the collaboration at large. The results of the various stages of the project will also be reported at scientific conferences and workshops and at the regular ATLAS TRT and Inner Detector meetings (normally three times a year), and will be published as ATLAS Internal Notes and as articles in scientific journals. The exchange of information between the participants will be conducted through electronic mail, Internet Web pages and the ATLAS Engineering Data Management System. If the objectives of the project are achieved on the proposed time-scale, the mass production of the TRT modules (end-cap wheels) will then proceed at full speed, using the know-how obtained by the successful completion of the work proposed in this project. The experience gained during the construction of this tracking detector of unprecedented complexity should also be useful in the future for teams working on the design and construction of apparatus in space research programmes and research at high-intensity particle accelerators.
