Propulsion and aerothermodynamic testing in hypersonic wind tunnel of new generation

Obiettivo

The submitted project is aimed at the verification of the real characteristics and possibilities of the newly commissioned hypersonic wind tunnel AT-303 designed for ground testing of scramjet-powered vehicles for propulsion and aero-thermodynamics experiments in comparison with similar characteristics of modern European hypersonic wind tunnels. The original concept of this hypersonic wind tunnel which has no equivalent in Europe allows to simulate almost real Reynolds number values (108 to 4.106) for high Mach numbers (7 to 20) with high purity free stream and relatively long duration runs (40ms minimum).

The research program proposed includes the following investigations:
a) nozzle flow field characteristics, with comparison with European facility performance including the Long-shot tunnel which is the closest to AT-303 in terms of Reynolds numbers simulated;
b) aerodynamic flow field characteristics on referenced models with comparison with results obtained in European facilities;
c) scramjet model testing.

The operating characteristics of the new hypersonic wind tunnel AT-303 will be evaluated and confirmed in comparison with similar characteristics from the modern European hypersonic wind tunnels. The experimental activities will be complemented by numerical re-buildings of the experiments with the objective of assessing confidence level in the free stream properties determined experimentally. These investigations are intended to demonstrate a real extension of the available ground testing simulation capabilities offered by this new tunnel in the high Mach - high Reynolds numbers domain. As a result of these investigations, a set of data for numerical code validations in hypersonic flow at high Reynolds number will be made available to the scientific community. New possibilities for scramjet model ground testing offered by the tunnel will be clearly demonstrated.
The results obtained within the frame of the present research project will be presented in the form of scientific reports and publications.
