Objective The aim of the project is to optimise the metallurgical structure and the crystallographic texture of continuously-annealed steel sheets for highly competitive tinplate end tops of easy-opening full-aperture cans. The application requires the lowest resistance to tearing by shear normal to the sheet plane compatible with the required resistance to internal can pressure. Such compromise involves fracture and plastic properties of the material, related with structural parameters (inclusion contents, hardening state, crystallographic texture), which can be independently controlled during the metallurgical process. In particular, a fundamentally-based index for qualifying tin-plate for the application will be looked for. Such index will be used as a guide for the comparison of the relative aptitude of different steels grades, different continuous annealing cycles and different final (single or double) reduction states for making easy-opening can ends.
