Objective Insufficient coiling quality remains a severe problem in strip production and is due mainly to the fact that control of the multivariable coiling process is still performed by conventional single input/single output control loops. The overall aim of this research project is to define advanced control strategies for coiler control, including controllers, which can adopt multivariable models, the provision of more accurate data on the speed and location of the strip as it approaches the coiler, and feedback on the actual coil profile. Attempts will also be made to incorporate an expert system to associate coiling defects with their causes.
