Objective ONERA has completed the microstructural investigations on the 2650 type alloys tested in task 1. These results propose an interesting interpretation of the relationship between microstructure and creep properties as a function of chemical composition, more particularly in regard to Ag and Si contents. The main points of this study are: - the confirmation of the presence of an unknown phase, different from S', in the Ag containing alloys. - the creep behaviour seems to be more dependant upon the fineness of the precipitation than on its nature (X or S'), - considering their microstructure, it appears that the precipitation heat treatment of the medium Ag/medium Si alloy was not optimised. Improvements of the creep behaviour may certainly be obtained by modification of the thermomechanical treatment of these alloys.Developing a new aluminium alloy being fabricated by low cost conventional ingot metallurgy with higher specific properties, in particular creep resistance, than old existing alloys such as 2618 or 2219, at temperatures around 150 C and for durations of exposure greater than or equal to ten thousand hours, is the prime objective of this R & D work. This research, which will have significant positive consequences on many general engineering application using 2618 today, is absoluty required for the development of the new supersonic civil transport aircraft, as preliminary studies clearly indicate that, because of the requirements driven by the new noise and pollution regulations and the necessary economical viability of the new aircraft, existing alloys are not adequate.Apart the supersonic aircraft, which will constitute the main part of the strucure of, the developped alloy, available at a cost equal to the one of conventional metals corresponding today to the same applications, will be used for:-structural parts or aircraft and helicopter structures with an expected achievement of 10% weight saving-moving components of engines-general engineering applications, such as dies for plastic moulding, with an expected achievement of 50 to 100% increase of life time of the part.
