CONVIVIO - The Network for People-Centred Design of Interactive Systems

Objectif

Convivio: the Network for people-centred interactive design, aims to provide a supportive infrastructure for an emerging interdisciplinary community of researchers and practitioners involved in the design and use of novel information and communications technologies that service human needs. This emerging community is intrinsically international and multi-disciplinary and needs to be sustained to become an important voice in the ICT research arena.
Convivio therefore needs to:
- maintain an open, global perspective that encompasses those involved in examining technological vistas - forms, patterns, products and services - in the next 10-20 years;
- establish a Network of competencies, a multidisciplinary virtual centre of excellence, that can support both short-term and long-term activities;
- provide informed independent input on the development of technologies that will impact profoundly on the everyday life of individuals and communities into European decision-making bodies and actors;
- be based in Europe with an international constituency;
- work by the community and for the community, always seeking novel mechanisms for collaboration which can release the highest levels of dynamism and creativity among the community members.
In this way, Convivio will allow the community to overcome these difficulties in its first phase of organised life (2002-2005). After this period, the community should become able to continue independently, requiring support from the European Commission only for sponsorship of its most important initiatives (conferences, summer schools, magazines).
Convivio plans to meet its objective delivering to its reference community a variety of services that will
(1) promote the external visibility of the work carried on in it and;
(2) help it to share experiences and knowledge.

OBJECTIVES
The tasks of the Network will be promoting the external visibility of the work carried on in the community, and helping the community to share experiences and knowledge. The research community we envisage that will be supported by Convivio is multi-disciplinary (information and communication technology and science; human and social sciences; arts and industrial, graphic and interaction design), pluralistic (a variety of paradigms is promoted in a competitive and co-operative fashion) and multi-cultural (its research is grounded on a variety of cultural traditions and seeks to open them to others' experiences).
