Integrated tool for in situ characterization of effectiveness and durability of conservation techniques in historical structures

Objective

The European Cultural Heritage deals with a great variety of structures of high intrinsic value. Among these are the stones the key elements of our monuments. However, it has become clear that in contemporary urban environment deterioration of untreated and consolidated stones occurs at an alarming rate. Damage diagnosis of stones is the first stage in the planning of the remedial steps to which the success of the restoration will be entrusted. Till now there is not available in the market a valid "stone-friendly" procedure for the in site assessment of effectiveness and durability of stone consolidation. The main Project goal is to develop this technology through the design, construction and validation of an integrated portable tool (DIAS). The components of this tool are special micro drilling, indentation and acoustic devices and system management software.
