Objective ASSET is a major European initiative to exploit and develop EO data using data assimilation to: (a) develop a European capability for chemical/UV forecasting, and (b) provide analyses for climate/chemistry studies. It will provide a network for the long-term exploitation of EO data within the European Research Area concept. ASSET will add value to Envisat data by assimilation into NWP systems and photochemical models. Strategies for the assimilation of Envisat data into NWP systems will be assessed. Assimilation of Envisat photochemical data will be used to study the distribution/variability of key species such as ozone. ASSET brings together experts from all aspects of the assimilation problem: NWP, chemical assimilation, modelling, meteorology, retrieval and assimilation theory, and observations. ASSET builds on the Envisat effort. Beneficiaries include NWP agencies, ESA, climate researchers, government, industry, and the public.
