Archimedes 2001 - 'msc integrated industrial engineering'

Objectif

This is an invention, which has been proven through a fully working prototype. Relating to orthopedic limb replacement research. Addressing the call for concepts to aid disabled people, especially those with upper extremity, hand-wrist replacements, or awaiting more permanent replacements. The gripper was originally intended for the food industry, developed at my placement company RHMTechnology. The gripper uses an arrangement of gears and spur tracks, to manipulate a flexible, central toroid, which is capable of providing the 'grip', without damaging the object being handled. So with delicate, organic and generally small objects in mind, it was thought that the prototype could be adapted for use in the upper-extremity limb replacement fields. A simplified version of the original robotic device, used for picking food was created, using a handheld arrangement.
This hand version will then be adapted further for the specialist area of interest. See Fig.l and 3 in attachments.
Application:
- Application of the device to total loss of limb cases, due to trauma (bums, mine- detonation, accidents).
- Use for partial loss victims - such that a 'replacement' would provide more function than the existing, 'dead limb'.
- Implementation of the device, with the elder population, pediatric fields and the general population in mind.
- Use of the device with myo-electrics and testing against current replacements.
- Use of the device with the latest developments in the prosthetics field, which use pressure transducers in 'Sensory Feedback' limbs - which allow the user to know if they are passing something too hot to someone else. So feedback that allows the user to have greater sensitivity to the object.
Areas of implementation
- In industries employing large numbers of unskilled, manual workers such as assembly lines - where low-skilled, repetitive work is required. The picking/packing advantages of such a device are apparent - allowing people the choice of being able
