THE DEVELOPMENT OF CO-PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES FOR MULTIFUNCTIONAL ELECTRIC CERAMIC COMPONENTS

With the recent implementation of the Electromagnetic Comptatibility Directive (EMC) Directive from the EC the market for EMI suppression and surge protection components is growing rapidly. In particular, filtered connectors currently offered by the market comprose a limited range of expensive hand made products resulting in a significant market opportunity for low cost mass producible filters.

In this project the technology to co-process several materials to form novel multi-function passive electronic components will be developed. In particular it will incorporate a varistor function (to give transient voltage and EMP protection) an inductor and a capacitor. It will reduce a relatively complex filter network of discrete devices to a single component. To meet size and mass constraints (and to achieve mechanical integrity between the parts) multi-layer technology already used for fabrication of discrete capacitor and varistor components, will be developed for co-processing several materials.

The project also requires the integration of capacitor and varistor manufacturing technology and the design and development of a filter network incorporating a ferrite inductor in a signle co-processed component.

The project offers the advantages of higher component density, reduced complexity of assembly methods and improved reliabiligty. It is consistent with the trend towards component miniaturisation and will help to keep European producers ahead of the U.S. and Japanese competition in this field.
