Microbial pest control for sustainable peri-urban/urban agriculture in latin america

Objective

Through interdisciplinary research this project will promote sustainable land-use in the rural-urban interface in Latin America. This will involve the development of socially and economically sustainable microbial control strategies (based on fungi) for key soil and foliar pests in per-urban and urban vegetable production via a systems approach in two LAM countries, Cuba and Mexico. Research will integrate socioeconomic surveys of farmer/ industry perceptions of microbial control in Cuba and Mexico with laboratary and field evaluation of fungus establishment, control strategy and inoculum production technology. All technology will be transferred directly to all stakeholders through close links with extension agencies in Cuba and Mexico.
