Template grown molecular nanomaterials

Objetivo

Nanoscience has emerged as an important frontier for fundamental advances in the chemical and physical sciences. This RTN is designed to bring together and co-ordinate an interdisciplinary team whose members each contribute separate areas of expertise relevant to the objectives of the scientific programme. These objectives are to establish and improve the synthesis of interesting new nano materials, with unprecedented properties, via template based processes. In order to evaluate the new nanomaterials a range of physical methods need to be applied and developed. This RTN brings together teams with expertise spanning many areas of synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials. For example single walled carbon nanotubes have been shown to be an exceptionally versatile template for the synthesis of nano crystalline materials and this area will clearly lead to advances in the fundamental understanding of the structures and properties of new low-dimensional namomaterials. The challenge of detailed characterisation of the physical and chemical properties of the new nanomaterials will in turn lead to development of new methodologies. For example, the application of image restoration processes in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy has already proved to be exceptionally valuable for structural characterization. Other state-of-the-art techniques in which the network has expertise will be utilized to gain understanding into the structures and properties of these new materials.
