X-ray micro-fluorescence measurement of macro-segregations by direct local analysis of solid samples

Cel

For certain grades of continuous cast steel there are still segregation problems in the neighbourhood of the axis, despite the advances which have been made in controlling the casting parameters and the solidification structure particularly by means of electromagnetic stirring. These segregations, by the high to very high local concentrations of segregation elements, which they cause even in high-purity grades, result in considerable degradation and dissipation of the use properties of the finished products. The conventional characterization techniques are either qualitative and insensitive (metallographic etching) or unsuited to the size of the heterogeneities to be shown (microanalyzer with electronic probe).

The aim of the research is to develop a method of elementary local analysis of the macrosegregations and mesosegregations present in the raw products of continuous casting, based on the use of energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence. There would be a choice of analysis area dimensions: 2 x 2 mm²; 1 x 1 mm²; 0.5 x 0.5 mm²; 0.2 x 0.2 mm². In an initial phase, analysis would be confined to elements with atomic numbers higher than that of titanium, but an extension towards the elements sulphur and phosphorus is envisaged. The study will comprise a stage in which an experimental set-up adapted to the problem will be designed and constructed, a stage in which specific software will be written for ultimately mapping the segregating elements and a stage in which the influence of various metallurgical parameters will be studied.
