Objective This proposal will gather expertise in ethics, research methods and clinical trials to elaborate recommendations on ethical issues in clinical trials on tuberculosis (TB) in developing countries. The European Commission is already supporting efforts to control and prevent tuberculosis through projects to develop new vaccines, drugs and strategies. The next step will be the establishment of clinical trials in developing countries with high incidence of TB. Previous meeting disclosed limitations of universal guidelines for ethics in international clinical research. It showed the needs for the development of recommendations regarding comments and suggestions resulting from the experiences of the partners in Africa and Asia. This proposal will use workshops, printed materials and electronic communications to prepare documents to help investigators, field workers and public health authorities.
